A highly informative and engaging training session was recently conducted under the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Employment Intensive Infrastructure Program (EIIP) in Lebanon, funded by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank. The session, held on March 22, 2024, brought together 60 companies and 90 industry professionals eager to enhance their understanding of the EIIP methodology and the Local Resource Based Technology (LRBT). The attendance was very high as the invitation was extended through the Lebanese Syndicate of Contractors to reach out to their registered national contractors.
Hosted by the ILO, the training aimed to equip contractors with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully bid on EIIP projects. All sessions covered a comprehensive range of topics, including project planning, budgeting, and adhering to EIIP procurement procedures. Additionally, one of the sessions was guided by the Lebanese Reforestation Initiative (LRI), specifically focusing on the upcoming Green Plan Projects.
The training session not only provided valuable insights into the ILO EIIP work process but also facilitated an interactive platform for participants to engage in meaningful discussions. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with ILO EIIP staff, beneficiaries, and implementing partners, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange and networking.
This is a mandatory training for contractors who wish to submit a bid for the works contracts under the EIIP. These contracts follow the FIDIC contract for minor works and contractors must follow the ILO procurement rules and be register with the UNGM. While participation does not guarantee project awards, it levels the playing field and ensures that all contractors are well-informed about the EIIP requirements and procedures.
The significance of this training session extends beyond immediate project prospects. It contributes to the overall growth and development of the private sector in Lebanon, as contractors enhance their expertise in adopting the EIIP and LRBT approach. This, in turn, positively impacts the sustainability and success of infrastructure projects both within and beyond the EIIP framework.
By fostering collaboration with professional institutions and industry stakeholders, the program aims to strengthen capacity building initiatives and facilitate long-term partnerships.
