Within the framework of the ILO EIIP Programme phase V, funded by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank, community hearing sessions were recently conducted in Jounieh and Abbassiyeh municipalities. Both sessions aimed to gather public opinion and feedback on the proposed design for both projects. Understanding the importance of community engagement, the ILO, in partnership with local authorities, arranged these hearing sessions to ensure that the projects meet the needs and aspirations of the people they are intended to serve.

The community hearing session in Jounieh took place where residents eagerly shared their thoughts and suggestions. The session focused on the revitalization of the coastal alleys that connect Souk Jounieh's pedestrian sidewalks to the public beach. These alleys, nestled between heritage houses overlooking the bay, hold immense cultural and historical significance. The local community's input proved invaluable in preserving the essence of Jounieh's heritage while improving accessibility and creating a seamless pedestrian experience.

Similarly, the hearing session in Abbassiyeh municipality witnessed an active engagement of community members. The discussion centred around the Abbasiyeh Sour Pedestrian Network project, which aims to address the high demand for a proper pedestrian network in the area. The proposed design includes sidewalks, road markings, traffic calming features, and other infrastructure interventions. The residents expressed their views on how the project can best serve their needs, enhance pedestrian safety, and complement the existing urban fabric.

These community hearing sessions showcased the commitment of the ILO-EIIP and its partners to inclusive and participatory decision-making processes. By involving the local community, the projects are tailored to address their specific requirements and aspirations. The valuable feedback received during these sessions greatly contributed to finalize the project designs, ensuring that they align with the expectations and priorities of the residents.

In addition to the above and in line with ILO’s commitment to effective inclusion and universal accessibility, the ILO/EIIP have consulted with the national Organization of Persons with Disabilities (OPD) on the design and updated accordingly.

The ILO EIIP Phase V projects aim not only to improve infrastructure but also to generate sustainable employment opportunities. The projects' implementation will create decent job opportunities for local workers, positively impacting the economy and livelihoods of the communities involved.
