The German Ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Kurt Georg Stoeckl-Stillfried, accompanied by the ILO Deputy Country Director for Arab States, Mr. Peter Rademaker, visited the recently opened Muhammara School in Akkar, Northern Lebanon. They were accompanied by a delegation from the German Embassy, the KfW Development Bank, and the International Organization. The school principal, Mr. Bassam Agha, warmly welcomed the delegation and conducted a tour of the newly constructed school. The school features a modern annex building and will soon have a green rooftop and locally manufactured school furniture. The construction work follows ILO's guidelines for decent working conditions, ensuring the employment of local people and maintaining environmental, social, and safety standards. It is important to note that the ILO's EIIP programme in Lebanon receives funding from the German Government through KfW.

During the visit, the ambassador and the delegation interacted with the students at the Muhammara School and their teachers getting insights on the impact of the school's improvements on their education and well-being.

Located in the Akkar District, the Muhammara School has been pivotal for addressing critical education needs in the area for all its residents. The school underwent significant improvements, enhancing the school's sustainability, capacity and learning environment for all students. While the newly built block was finalized and inaugurated in October 2023, the green rooftops and manufacturing of furniture are expected to be finalized by August2024.

The green rooftop project at Muhammara School showcases sustainable solutions, offering improved insulation, reduced energy usage, better air quality, and biodiversity promotion. This will also be implemented in line with decent work principles recruiting local labours including women and persons with disabilities.

The collaboration between the ILO EIIP, funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank, and local partners e not only supports the functionality and sustainability of the school but also contributes to the local economy and generates employment opportunities for the local community.
