In the historic coastal town of Jbeil in Mount Lebanon, a transformative project is taking shape—the Jbeil Pedestrian Network Project. Implemented by the ILO EIIP and funded by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank, this project aims to enhance pedestrian infrastructure along a crucial entry road to the town center, focusing on safety, inclusivity, and connectivity for all community members.
The aim of the project is to provide new pedestrian sidewalks and strategically positioned roundabouts at the busy entrance to the town. The construction uses the EIIP’s local resource-based methodology which maximises daily work opportunities to the town’s most vulnerable population. These enhancements are designed not only to optimize traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety but also to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities. With unwavering support from the local municipality and access to vital data and documentation, the project is well-positioned to bring about significant positive changes to the urban fabric of Jbeil.
Jbeil or Byblos is a famous town, reputed to be one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, it is famous for its historic castle dating from the Phoenician times and is a popular touristic destination with restaurants and souks (markets). A safe pedestrian access and traffic calming measures greatly enhances the access to the old town.
The proposed construction plans encompass 1.5 kilometres of sidewalks, incorporating features such as stormwater channels and crash barriers to bolster safety measures. These sidewalks, with an average width of 2-3 meters, are tailored to provide spacious and secure pathways for pedestrians, including pedestrians with disabilities.
Building on the success of past community-driven initiatives by ILO EIIP, the Pedestrian Network Project is projected to generate approximately 7000 workdays of decent employment for individuals, with a focus on providing inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities and women.
Through collaborative planning and a participatory approach, this initiative underscores the project's dedication to fostering a diverse and empowered community while ensuring that all voices are heard and valued in the creation of a more accessible and welcoming urban environment that enhances the diversity and vibrancy of this community.
